Hi everybody! I’m posting about a TV Show on the Noggin Network that my son LOVES and your kids may love, as well. Seriously, he gets laser focused (glued to the TV, as it were) when this show comes on and gets the BIGGEST grin of indulgence on his face. What show am I talking about?
Jack’s Big Music Show
According to the show introduction, Jack’s Big Music Show helps kids learn, understand and appreciate music diversity. Funny enough, it actually helps the parents learn more about music diversity, as well. What can I say? I really enjoy the show and cannot get the theme song out of my head.
Moving forward, Jack’s Big Music Show features three main puppet characters:
- Jack – Star of the show.
- Mary – Jack’s best friend.
- Mel – Jack’s dog.
Each episode of season 1 features Jack, Mary and Mel engaged in some concerted extravaganza; playing a variety of different instruments and a variety of music types. The song-playing is built around a central theme that generally leads to a moral or lesson learned, which is a good thing these days.
Each episode also includes a few friendly interruptions by visitors like the Schwartzman Quartet (a puppet barber shop quartet), who is always popping in for a little acapella interlude. The show also nicely ties in some similarly themed music videos with fun songs your kids will love to sing and dance. Funny enough, I catch my wife dancing and singing, too. (:
Here’s an example. A turtle walks in and asks to bust an old school rap, so Jack, Mary and Mel let him. A definite classic.
Please, click directly on the Play button [>] to play the clip. Enjoy!
Overall, Jack’s Big Music Show is a TV program I really enjoy letting my son view. Again, he gets totally into it–clapping, stomping his feet, dancing, etc. This program gets my thumb up because it is truly a good show for boys and girls of all ages (IMHO).

Enjoy!

My 9 month old has loved this show since he was 6 months old or even younger! Why don’t they have dolls or more episodes? We have 23 recorded when we need a minute to do something, my son is entertained for 20 minutes it’s great!

Hi Mary. Thank you for leaving a comment. I am not sure why they canceled the show, but I remember reading somewhere that there were a bunch of parents trying to get the show to come back. Try searching Google for “jack’s big music show canceled” or similar queries. I’ll do the same and see if I can find something.

My husband and I totally agree. My 17 month old has been watching all 23 episodes since he was 6 months old and loves it. We want more episodes!

My boys haven’t seen this but if it were on I am sure they would.

Only 23 episodes…what a shame. Thanks to DVR, I think I’ve seen every episode 100 times over. I’m grateful it’s still on but would love to see some new ones.

My 13 month old loves this show… We watch the DVD in the car over and over and over again. She can even say Jack. We have to get the show back…

That’s sad that there’s only 23 episodes. =[ I couldn’t find why it got cancelled, but I wish it would come back. My son doesn’t watch TV, but he’ll actually watch this one and sing and dance.

I’m pretty good at search and I couldn’t find a thing. I wonder if it was just too expensive to produce?

JBMS has space on Facebook with several sites. One is for people who want Jack and the Gang back on.
I emailed Spiffy Productions and got a quick and very nice response from Todd Hannert, one of the producers for Jack. Actually, from the credits Todd is involved with all of the show.
He said that they would love to see it back on but it was not up to them. Noggin had the show so I suppose that Noggin canceled it. Of course if it was always on at 10 or 11 pm then of course kids are NOT watching it so the numbers would be down!
Noggin is the place to start. They have a web site and emails can be sent to them about JBMS and why you want it back on the air and at a reasonable time for little ones to watch.
IF enough parents and grandparents contact them, perhaps the importance of the show will be noticed. I wrote, you can too. Best Wishes!

Awesome, thanks Cheryl. I’ll have a look.

We’ve got 25 episodes on the DVR. So bummed to hear that’s it! My daughter LOVES this show. Today is her 1st birthday and she said her first actual word this morning. She said “Jack”. I happened across this when I was searching for a doll or something for her. Jack, Mary, Mel and all the others will be missed but will live on in our house thanks to the DVR.

Never thought I would be e-mailing about a kid’s show, but here I am. My 15 month old has LOVED…and I mean LOVED Jack, Mary, and Mel since around 6 months old. It is really the only show she watches. (And, I must admit that we enjoy it, too. “Mel’s Super Swell Dance Party” is my favorite!) We have DVR’ed several episodes so we have them, but I’m so sad it’s been cancelled. I will check Noggin and Facebook to put my 2 cents worth in. Thanks for the information! Dum, diddy-dum, dee, dum, dee, dum, dum..

my little brother LOVES this show and he never watches TV exept for this! They should totally keep making this show! does anyone know why???

i’m with you, jacks big music show is great. My 10 month old grandson
loves the show. He’ll stop what he’s doing when a song or voice he relates
to comes on. All we have to say is here comes Laurie and he turns to the TV.
It’s a great show and we have several on dvr, thank goodness.
But we will really miss all the wonderful people who worked on this show.
I guess it’s no more lessons for Jack.

I have been searching and searching… but can’t find the season 2 episodes ANYWHERE… anyone have any ideas as to where I can find it for purchase or download? We no longer subscribe to the cable package with the Noggin channel because Comca$t is too darn expen$ive!

I don’t think that they actually produced a Season 2 DVD. I have a feeling the season ended prematurely.

I too love this show (one of my daughter’s faves), but it’s my belief that the show wasn’t exactly “canceled” but rather no new episoides are “ordered” by the network.
If you look at this from a financial perspective for any children’s show (there are exceptions like Sesame St and a few others of course), there isn’t much of a need to produce more than 2 seasons (or 30 or so) of episodes of a program. If the age bracket of the viewer is in the 3-5 year old range, your audience is constantly cycling in and out of the bracket. Example, you get new 3 year olds that have never watched cycling in, so it’s new to them and 6 year olds cycling out that are no longer interested. Plus, kids will watch things over and over again. So although I am sad that there so few episodes of this show, I get why Noggin hasn’t ordered any more.
Look at Oswald – the show was produced for 2 seasons back in 2001/2002 but still shows re-runs today. Kids that watched it back then could care less now since they’re too old… but there are plenty of current pre-schoolers that find those old episodes still as fresh today. Why spend money to produce new episodes?
Anyhow, just food for thought. I’ll stop rambling.

This is a real shame. I am a new parent and my 1 year old daughter loves the show and I will admit that I kinda think it’s super swell. Have you ever tried to sit with your child and watch Sesame Street, (very, very painful). If it were up to me big bird would be at my house on November 26th as the guest of honor. I found this blog while trying to buy my daughter a Jack doll for her first birthday.

Eric, thank you for the link. I just bought the DVD for your son for Christmas.

My 8 month old daughter loves this show. As do I!!! I would love to do her 1st birtday party with “Jack’s Big Music Show theme” . I can’t find party supplies anywhere. Does anyone know where I can find some. All I found was the template to make the cake!!! So if anyone knows please let me know!!!
Thanks!

I love Jack’s Big Music Show. I love Noggin on Demand a that’s how we get our Jack fix.
Linda, for the theme, you can use the printouts from Noggin as decoration or gifts.
We use the instrument flash cards as luggage tags!
Good luck with the birthday party.

How many shows are there on the season 1 DVD? I also have 23 or so episodes on the DVR, but would love to have them for future use when grandchildren come into the picture…. Thanks

@Rheanne
Season 1 is actually just music. I was a bit dismayed since the title eludes to video. The video DVD is the “Let’s Rock” disc (above). It has a few shows on it.

My almost 2 year old is addicted to Jack, we have the dvd and the CD. Nick Jr is playing it again at 8:30 during the week but there have been no new episodes yet….(please please)
[Reply to this comment]
Glad to hear someone else is looking for this stuff and can’t find it!!! Its maddening, because my older children grew up on dora and blues clues, so I have that by the ton, but to find something my little guy likes now, it’s nearly impossible. Maybe Nick Jr could replace some of the dora episodes with some things that we really want to see!!! I would like to see JBMS, Oswald, Upside Down Show, Little Bill and Blues Clues rather than see dora six times a day!!

To all you Mom’s, Dad’s or Grandparents too, that are looking for Jack, Mary or Mel dolls I make them. I also make Moose A. Moose, Zee, Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!, and Star from The Good Night Show. I get terrific feedback too.
I have small recorders I can add to make them sing/talk in the characters voice after you record what you want. They have replaceable batteries and you can change the recording any time you want to keep the child’s interest longer.
For party supplies print as many copies of the characters from my website or theirs. Cut into a circle smaller than a saucer. Take the saucer and make a circle on clear Contact plastic. It’s with all the Contact at WalMart, Kmart, ect. Cover the picture you cut of the animals and attach it to a foam or paper plate. You now a waterproof party plate! You can wash the cake and ice cream off, peel the Contact and the kids have a big sticker.
Eric, Thanks for the nice letters .

My 14 month old LOVES Jack and will crack up laughing everytime Jack talks. He likes bouncing to the music. Where can I get the the videos? Also where can I get the dolls, at least Jack for my son???
[Reply to this comment]
I make Jack, Mary and Mel dolls. Check my website @ http://www.mooseandzee.zoomshare.com or email me for my newsletter. I charge $30 each for Jack and Mary and $35 for Mel as I have to make my own fabric for him. Each one takes 5-6 hours to make. I also can make them talk/sing for $10 extra.

My son is 9 months old and since he was born, Jack has been his best friend!! I totally agree that we could all do with alittle less Dora, Diego and (my personal opinion) the Gabba Gabbas!!! I am on a mission to get JBMS back on the air!! My son Mason will be 1 in September and I want to give him a JBMS party!!
